Republican, Scouts And Coronation Oaths
Citizens in some republics swear allegiance to their head of state. In UK citizens have been invited to swear allegiance to King Charles 'and his heirs and successors'. This has caused a back-lash - who wants to swear allegiance to a paedo-phile?
The press recently reported that the Brownies are to drop references to God in the name of inclusivity. Members of scouting and guide movements in UK have until recently promised 'I will do my duty to God and the king/queen'.
Why do duty? If God is replaced with 'survival of the fittest' or 'anything goes' duty goes out of the window. Once we throw out duty we sow the seeds that will replace civilised society with narcisism. It would be much better to promise 'I will do my duty to God or Good'.
But why pledge duty to the king when some are anarchists or republicans?
A Buddhist radio commentor on the coronation of The Head of the Commonwealth of 53 nations commended Charles' book Harmony. Like Buddhists, he seeks a world where nature and humans, varied communities, races and income-brackets live in harmony. Christians are friends of Buddhists. We ask 'Where does this built-in harmony come from?' and 'what destroys this harmony?'. We believe it comes from God, and that evil destroys it.
So I will make this pledge at the coronation, (and would do it whoever is head of state) and invite all of you do to so too:
I pledge allegiance to the Common Good, the well-being of the earth
and to the Head of State in the pursuit of these ideals
