Read The Signs Of The Times

Tomas Halik is a renowned Czech theologian and Catholic priest.  In a recent article in  The Tablet he recognises that the role of religion is changing.  Its role as a buttress to society is diminshing.  But it has a new role.  Religion comes from the Latin word religio.  This is derived from the verb re-legere meaning 'to read again'.  A key role for religion in the future  is to be a school for a new, deeper reading of the world, of a contemplative approach to reality,.

Jesus taught his disciples to 'read the signs of the times'. He entrusted the church with a prophetic role.

We have to learn to read the signs of the times: the cries of the poor, the cries of the confused and the cries of the earth,
