Re- Humanising Spiritual Formation
We have decided to add Our Unforming: De-Westernizing Spiritual Formation by Cindy Lee to our CAH library on Lindisfarne.
This week I baptised a young adult in our local parish church. The baptism brochure contained these words (do you think these contribute to de-westernising spiritual formation - or better still, re-humanising spiritual formation?):
'Baptism is the outward sign of the inner willingness of the baptised person to be washed from sin by the living Christ, to be continually immersed in the Spirit of Christ, and to embark on a life-long voyage with Christ across life's varied oceans until reaching our heavenly glory.
The person to be baptised recognises that the selfish ego constantly pulls individuals and nations down in to division, disrespect, unjust ways and war. They recognise that when Christ (who alone was without sin) was baptised in the river Jordan he began to reconcile the human race (Adam) to God and to restore fellowshiop between creation (Eden) and the Creator. At our baptism we join in this endeavour ....'
