Easter And Gen Z
A Happy Easter to you all (even to those for whom it is not yet).
Bible Society research reveals that ' Gen Z' (people born between 1991 and 2009) are turning to a church. In UK, for example, 35% are Catholics, 25% are Anglicans/Epicopalians, and 11% are Pentecostal.
Gen Z have always been aware that there is a spiritual dimension to life even as many adopted easy-as-you go experiments with sex, drugs and paradigms. Now many are digging deeper into Scriptures, Sacraments, Saints or Spiritual Practices.
This is good news as far as it goes, but it does not go far enough. For they are called to look outwards to others in need as well as inwards to their own souls. They need to reach out to the homeless, the refugees, the hate-filled criminals, the unemployed and racial minorities and inttroduce them to 'the expulsive power of a new affection'. by walking beside them with empathy, intrtoducing them to 'he spiritual disciplines that can harvest into a new way of life for us all.
So our Community of Aidan and Hilda challenge to Gen Z is: 'Reach out as well as go deep and never cease to journey.' This is a Way of Life that can make Easter last for ever.
